Menstruation is a natural biological process that every girl experiences, yet for many, the first time can be confusing and even frightening. I remember the first time it happened to me—I was playing outside when I suddenly noticed bleeding. I panicked and rushed home, unsure of what was happening. I thought I had injured myself! When I told my mother, she calmly reassured me, checked me and explained everything step by step. She helped me understand that menstruation is a normal part of growing up and that there’s nothing to fear. She also guided me on the precautions to take during this time.

It is essential for every girl to be aware of this natural process and know how to manage it properly. In this article, we’ll discuss what menstruation is and the precautions one should take for a comfortable and healthy period.

What is Menstruation?

Menstruation, also called a period, is a natural process in a girl’s body that usually happens once every month. It means the body is growing and getting ready for the future when a girl may become a woman and have babies.

During menstruation, a little blood comes out from the vagina for a few days — this is normal and healthy. It happens because the body is cleaning out the lining inside the uterus (the part of the body where a baby can grow).

Using clean sanitary pads (such as Peels by SAFNIC) and keeping good hygiene during this time helps you stay fresh, healthy and comfortable.

Essential Menstrual Precautions

To maintain hygiene, manage discomfort and prevent health concerns, follow these essential precautions:

1. Maintain Proper Hygiene

a) Change your sanitary pad or tampon every 3-4 hours to prevent bacterial growth and reduce the risk of infection.

b) In case of using a menstrual cup, empty and clean it at least once a day.

c) Always wash your hands before and after handling menstrual products.

d) Wear breathable clothing and cotton underwear to allow air circulation and prevent moisture buildup.

2. Choose the Right Menstrual Products

a) Use pads, tampons or menstrual cups based on your comfort and preference.

b) Ensure the product is high-quality and suited to your flow.

3. Manage Menstrual Discomfort

a) To relieve cramps, use a heating pad or engage in light exercise like stretching or yoga.

b) Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and iron-rich foods to keep your energy levels up.

c) Get enough rest to reduce fatigue and improve mood during your period.

When to Seek Medical Attention

While menstruation is a normal process, some symptoms should not be ignored:
  1. Heavy bleeding: If you soak through a pad or tampon in less than an hour, seek medical advice immediately.
  2. Severe pain: Mild cramps are common, but if the pain becomes unbearable and affects your daily activities, consult a doctor.
  3. Irregular periods: If you experience prolonged bleeding, frequent spotting or an inconsistent cycle, seek medical advice.
  4. Unusual discharge: Any change in odour, colour, or consistency of vaginal discharge may indicate an infection and requires medical attention.
Remember, menstruation is a natural and normal part of life, and with the right knowledge and care, you can handle it with confidence!
